Founded in 1977 by Tom Johns in Albuquerque, New Mexico, National Roofing Company (National) is a full service commercial roofing and waterproofing contractor. The company provides a range of building services for both the public and private sectors in Central and Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado.

When Tom and his partner started the company they sought to create a new kind of roofing contractor that would be customer-focused, responsive and professional. Both had worked in the industry and wanted to raise the bar for roofing. “We just wanted to take care of the customer’s needs,” says Tom.

National demonstrates that commitment by being the only commercial contractor in New Mexico with its own full-time service department dedicated to inspections, warranty service, repair and re-roofing, short term and long-term maintenance.  

Initially the company provided residential re-roofs and roofing for large residential apartment projects, which provided a 10-year education in controlling costs, training a consistent workforce and acquiring the licenses with major roofing material manufacturers who write long-term warranties for NRC. As the company has grown, they’ve increased their commercial projects and have worked on a number of high profile projects in New Mexico, including Albuquerque Civic Plaza, UNM Children's Hospital, Wells Fargo Bank, Presbyterian Hospital, and the Bernalillo County Courthouse.

National Roofing’s dedication to excellence has, for 12 years now, earned it the Firestone "Master Contractor" designation and the company belongs to Firestone’s “Inner Circle of Quality”.  National also holds GAF Materials Corporation’s “Master Select Contractor” designation.  These are among the highest honors for safety and quality craftsmanship known in the industry.  

For the staff of 60, which grows to more than 100 seasonally, National is a great place to work, thanks to Tom’s ethic of “We're all eating off the same plate.” He, along with the rest of the team, eats, breathes, and sleeps roofing. That passion for what they do creates an environment where safety, training and opportunities for change and advancement abound. “It’s my job to make work as enjoyable as possible,” says Tom. “We’ve invented jobs to keep the right personality working for us because we care about our employees and want them to succeed.”

National provides its employees with multiple opportunities to develop new skills by regularly installing more than 100 different roofing assemblies, and every employee has a voice in how the company views the future. Four generations, all with different motivations and aspirations, have come together at National to work toward a more stimulating future.

What does that future hold? The company is planning continued growth and expansion, and hopes to add other trades, such as HVAC, electrical and building envelope technologies. He also wants to add architectural and engineering services, as well as an expanded product line that could include industrial skylights, photovoltaic systems and more.
